What is contamination OCD?

Contamination OCD is a common type of OCD. People with this form of OCD are very worried about germs, dirt, and cleanliness. Their thoughts about these things can take over their minds. They become obsessed with the fear of being contaminated and then do things (called compulsions) to try to reduce the stress caused by this fear.

Common contamination obsessions:

  • “What if I get sick and die?”

  • “What if I hug that person and they get me sick?”

  • “What if I spread an illness to someone else and they die?”

  • “What if I accidentally start the next pandemic?”

Common contamination compulsions:

  • Showering or changing clothes repeatedly

  • Washing hands repeatedly

  • Throwing away “contaminated items”

  • Asking a parent if they are going to get sick

  • Avoiding public restrooms

Of course, these are things everyone might think and do on occasion, especially after surviving COVID-19. However, if these thoughts and behaviors become all consuming and cause a great deal of distress in someone’s daily life, then it may be time to seek help from a mental health professional.
